Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive (WEEE) Explained

Posted by admin in electronic tool on 11 25th, 2009

Environmental pollution, particularly in land fills, from discarded electronic equipment (e-waste) or “waste electrical and electronic equipment” (WEEE), has been an increasing concern worldwide. Pollution occurs due to leakage of hazardous materials contained in the discarded equipment. The European Union has passed two related regulations to improve e-waste management and to limit the presence of hazardous materials in the waste.
One is the Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) Directive 2002/95/EC (popularly called the Lead free RoHS) which limits the presence of six hazardous materials in electrical and electronic equipment. The other is the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive 2002/96/EC. The WEEE directive aims at minimization of the impact of e-waste on the environment, by increasing re-use and recycling and reducing the amount of WEEE going to landfills. EU members are required to incorporate the provisions of both the RoHS and the WEEE are directives into their individual legislations.
Effective August 13, 2005, the WEEE directive, excludes equipment related to state security, arms and ammunition and war materials However it does cover thirteen categories of e-waste:
1. Large household appliances – excludes ODS fridges/freezers

2. Small household appliances (e.g. toaster, kettle, vacuum cleaner)

3. IT and telecommunications equipment

4. Consumer equipment (e.g. videos, radio, hi-fi) – excludes CRTs

5. Lighting equipment – excluding flourescent tubes

6. Electrical and electronic tools (e.g. drills, saws, sewing machines)

7. Toys, leisure and sports equipment (e.g. electric trains, video games)

8. Medical Devices – excludes contaminated items

9. Monitoring and control instruments (e.g. smoke detector, thermostats)

10. Automatic dispensers (e.g. vending machines)

11. Cooling equipment including category 10 devices with cooling

12. Display equipment (CRTs) including plasma and LCD

13. Gas discharge lamps (e.g. flourescent tubes)
The WEEE Directive is based on article 175 of the European Commission (EC) Treaty which established the European Union. This directive makes producers responsible for financing the collection, treatment, and recovery of waste electrical and electronic equipment. It also seeks to oblige distributors to allow consumers to return their waste equipment free of charge. This provision is based on the precept that the polluter should pay and applies irrespective of the selling technique, including distance selling.
Another aspect is the encouragement of product designs that facilitate dismantling and recovery. Producers are also required to provide reuse and treatment information on their products. This is to facilitate the reuse of components and to ensure the correct and environmentally sound treatment of WEEE, including maintenance, upgrade, refurbishment and recycling. EU member states are empowered to include additional products to the WEEE directive.
There are also provisions for and minimum standards for authorized collection and recycling sites. The directive also has certain labeling requirements such as the name of the producer, date code and a “Do Not Landfill” mark which consists of a crossed out wheel bin with a bar underneath indicating that the product was placed on the market after August 13, 2005.
The European Community has taken the lead on environmental issues and often, a role model for other nations. Many nations including the United States and China are considering WEEE legislation. The federal US legislation is expected to be in line with the EU WEEE. However, the draft legislation of the China WEEE, whose details are still sketchy, does not appear to be so. The China WEEE, when it comes, is likely to pose serious challenges for suppliers.

The 10 Most Memorable Gadgets in Asia in 2008

Posted by admin in japanese gadget on 11 21st, 2009

2008 has almost drawn to a close and its time for the world as a collective whole to draw breath gather its thoughts and throw out those lists of changes in the year that made people sit up and take notice.

While the first half of the year could have been called a Mac(intosh) attack (first there was the Macbook Air, then the 3G iPhone) and the second half of the year was the approaching ecopocalypse there was still other news and gadgets out there that caught people’s attention.

Here’s what we thought were the memorable gadgets to come out of Asia for 2008…

Asus Eee Netbooks

It could be their size, their price or the fact that, for a while, the makers of Eee laptop line put the Linux operating system on their laptops above windows and OSX but you didn’t have far to come accross a release about this Taiwanese company this year.

The latest entry onto the market were two models which made everything thinner and added a 3G modem in the November release of the Eee PC S101, Eee PC 1002H captured almost as much attention as the start of the year.

HTC G1

Much of the buzz around the HTC G1 surrounded the Google Android operating software (which was actually being worked on by a US company called Android before Google bought the company in 2005 and worked them into the team) announced in November 2007.

However, Taiwanese company HTC, (better known beforehand for touch phones like the HTC touch and computers like the HTC Shift) was the first off the line when it came to making the hardware to go along with the software.

Many of the reviews of the HTC G1 have been mixed so far but signs are improving.

Chinavasion Projector Phone

2008 was very much the year for phones and the Chinavasion projector phone was another that grabbed the attention from a lot of people. This could have come from two places…

Pico projectors were just as much hot property as cell phones with companies vying to be the first to release a commercial pico projector and gadget blogs trying to guess when that would happen.

3M looked like it was going to be first in line to get the mass produced projector onto the market when Chinavasion did more than beat them to the post. It did a little web 2.0 mash up to create a cell phone/projector.

Mind you, given the current Chinavasion track record, perhaps it is not such a surprise.

Softbank 823SH Tiffany

Japan, famous for their love of cell phones, gadgets and anything strange.

So it should come as no surprise when a Japanese phone provider, Softbank Mobile went “ecopocalypse what ecopocalypse?” and put out a smart phone with a case made completely of silver and diamonds from New York jewelers ‘Tiffanies”

The Softbank 823SH Tiffany has 537 diamonds, weighing 18.34 carats, encrusted in the case and cost around the 13 million yen mark (that’s 130,265 dollars to US dwellers). If you want one better get your skates on because according tothe company only 10 will be made initially.

Pyocotan’s Noriko San Goggles

While we’re on the topic of ‘aint Japan strange’ this piece of technology hit the interwebs around October. The length of time people spend commuting in Japan isn’t exactly anything new, neither is the fact that people go to sleep on commutes and miss their stop.

Japanese hacker, Pyocotan, came up with a new spin on the old-fashioned sign around the neck and the smell of cheap booze, Noriko-san googles which showed off the destination you were heading to… would people wake you up though?

Cassette MP3 Player

While launched by the company Chinavasion in late 2007 the Cassette MP3 player didn’t really capture the blogger’s attention until the start of the next year. Once people grabbed the idea they held onto it and for at least 12 months it was on somebody’s lips somewhere.

Perhaps the success of this MP3 player was that it was cheap, cute and let people use equipment that might have been destined to be sold out of the boots of cars at flea markets and underneath motorway overamps.

Styson i Knock

Another cheap and cheerful gadget from the greater China area (OK Taiwan) is the i-Knock. This gadget would be handy for the ‘social networking set’ hooked to their Facebook pages and instant messaging services it knocks itself out (and plays a tune if you program it nicely) every time you get an instant message. The perfect place for any unused photos of the ex-girlfriend/ex-boyfriend

Hopefully the end of 2008 will herald the end of the i- movement. This vowel movement makes me want to punch babies.

Samsung Touch Sight

While still in concept stage this would definitely have to be one of the coolest things to come out this year. The Touch Sight is a camera for the blind that takes a picture using braile and sound which owners can store and share with friends.

Chinavasion Super Cool Mobile Phone Wrist Watch

The cell phone watch idea has been for a long time, ever since a 1946 Dick Tracy strip at the very least, but it really didn’t hit the market until half-way through this year.

This cool cell phone watch was the start of a torrent of wrist phones and the wonderful realisation of the childhood dreams of many middle-aged men.

Tokyo Flash Watch

There hasn’t been too many months go by that one of these watches didn’t turn up in the gadget blogs.

They require special knowledge to work out, they use digital time if they don’t and they’re silver… it’s a wonder they weren’t first thought up in the 80′s

See the blog in all its glory at http://gadgetfreaks.wordpress.com or see what wholesale electronic gadgets are available online from China at companies like Chinavasion.

Electronic Commerce

Posted by admin in electronic tool on 11 17th, 2009

Internet has provided innumerable benefits with not only making the world a smaller place, in terms of communication ease but has also revolutionized the concept of carrying on business not only in the local markets but in the global market scenario. Electronic commerce or simply e-commerce is the order of the day. It can be defined as the carrying of the business activities over electronic means and systems such as the computer networks and internet. Ecommerce first came into existence in the 1970 when electronic fund transfer and electronic data interchange were introduced. Since then ecommerce has made its way into all forms of business activities like buying and selling, marketing, inventory management and transaction processing. Electronic commerce thus has its importance in the business world. But just like any other form of business, electronic commerce also has certain advantages and disadvantages. These are discussed below:

Advantages of e-commerce

1. The most important advantage of electronic commerce is that it has enabled individuals and business establishments to reach customers globally. The geographical boundaries have been diminished as business has now reached far flung areas and even small to medium business enterprises are promoting their products and services.

2. Sales and profits have increased as business can now be conducted round the clock with transactions being carried over despite holidays.

3. Customers have also been beneficial with the introduction of electronic commerce, as now they have access to the world market and they can compare prices and buy good quality products at cheaper rates. Middlemen profit can now be overcome by reaching the original manufacturers directly over the internet.

4. Online shopping has proved a boon for those that had been restricted due to time constraints or other factors. Not only does online shopping saves time, it also saves money. With comparison shopping customers can now avail the same goods at reasonable prices.

5. Business concerns are benefited by electronic commerce in the sense that they save on huge advertising and marketing costs, upkeep of employees and middlemen profits. On the other hand they can increase the customer base by using the investment saved by providing quality customer care services.

Disadvantages of e-commerce

1. The biggest disadvantage of e-commerce is that there are still some reservations regarding the security of financial transactions being carried over the internet. People vary of divulging their personal information. The authenticity and legitimacy of all the e commerce sites cannot be gauged.

2. Electronic commerce offers no business for perishable items. This is because people still like to buy these items by the conventional way. The time taken for delivery is what could make the difference. Even returning or exchanging products purchased electronically pose some problems.

However after reviewing both the advantages and disadvantages of electronic commerce, one can surely say that the advantages far outweigh the disadvantages. What is truly needed to expand businesses to a greater number of people is to build trust and overcome technical problems. This would surely change the present scenario and help in making electronic commerce adjust to the requirements of the people.

Top Electronic Educational Toys for Young Boys

Posted by admin in electronic project on 11 13th, 2009

Many toy manufactures now focus on the educational usefulness of the toys they produce.  After all, toys have been known to nurture minds while encouraging discovery and enjoyment.  Here are the top electronic educational toys for young boys that do not compromise the balance between fun and learning:

Number recognition
Introduce the joys of mathematics early to a young boy and help nurture a love for numbers.  There are several great electronic educational toys that young boys will love, including oversized talking calculators that teach basic mathematics such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.  These are colorful toys, which children find quite attractive.  Battery power means these electronic toys can be carried anywhere.

Another great addition for your child’s collection is the electronic numbers mat.  It consists of several mats with corresponding numbers and images.  When pressed, the image reads the numbers out loud.  Excellent for assisting young boys in learning to recognize and count numbers.  Mats with images emit animal sounds.

Sequencing games
When there are electronic educational toys, sequencing games no longer have to be boring stuff.  Engage your young boys in hours of fun, play and learning.  An excellent electronic toy to look for is the one offered by LeapFrog — children manipulate components of the toy to create patterns and even play melodies.  Helps focus not just on creativity and reasoning but also in developing children’s motor skills.

Building toys
Lego bricks are great but there are many electronic educational toys designed for young boys that encourage them to build and create another toy out of several components.  Consider getting your child a radio and electronics set of a basic circuitry board.  All components come in a box with instructions.

To build the toy itself, the child follows the instructions provided in an easy to read manual.  Once he’s done, he will be able to make his own radio, for example, or a simple circuits board that has a computer interface or even a simple robot that comes with a sensor.  Helps encourage creativity and scientific thinking; also helps develop focus.

Electronic educational toys such as these are best for older boys.  Some components are small enough to be choking hazards, so avoid giving to a young child.

Science kit
There is a wide variety of electronic educational toys that young boys will find interesting, particularly if they are fond of science.  Consider kits such as those that introduce your child to magnets, electricity, electromagnets, radio, sound, motion, computers and light.  Try puzzles that combine light and sound or radio-controlled toys.  For older kids, try the 100-in-1 or 200-in-1 electronic project kits that will provide them with neverending fun and learning.

Got Gadgets?…Windows Gadgets, That Is

Posted by admin in desktop gadget on 11 9th, 2009

One thing I like about using Windows [copyright Microsoft, Inc.] is that you can customize and personalize your computing experience. Like adding gadgets to your desktop.

Gadgets are small programs that sit on your Windows desktop. They usually are shortcuts to perform a function, automatically access information, display some control or statistic about your computer, and on, and on , and on. There are so many Windows gadgets that the list currently fills 189 pages on the Microsoft Live Gallery site http://gallery.live.com/ . I use the following gadgets on my desktop sidebar : a news feed, Internet TV access, a monitor of my wireless network, and a set of animated gauges that show how much CPU and memory I’m using.

The gallery of gadgets covers Windows XP, Vista and 7, however, right now the vast number are written for Vista. Each gadget in the gallery contains information on what it does, it’s requirements, a rating, and review comments from users. I recommend you use all this information to choose whether you want to download a gadget. For example, pay close attention to whether a Vista gadget is written for 32 bit or 64 bit Vista. It may make a difference in whether it’ll run on your computer or not.

It’s easy to obtain the gadgets too. To begin with, your version of Vista may have been installed with a sidebar of gadgets for you to choose from. A sidebar is a portion of your desktop that can be displayed on the right or left side and contains icons for the gadgets you choose to put there.

Another way to obtain gadgets is to go to Microsoft Gallery Live as noted above where you can search for gadgets by category, the latest gadgets (What’s New), Top Downloads, or you can scan through the gallery page by page. Right now these gadgets are free…I hope they stay that way.

There are other sites such as http://addgadget.com/ that offer free gadgets for download, but I haven’t tried any of them.

As with any download from the Web, beware that an unscrupulous author could use a gadget to load malware (viruses, bots, etc.) onto your computer. Make sure your anti-virus software is up to date and that the source of the gadget is reputable…I consider Microsoft as a reputable source.

Gadgets are a good source of free applications which will save you time, entertain you, or at least make your computing environment a bit more colorful. Give them a look and see if you like any of them.

Computer Monitors for Sale

Posted by admin in computer monitor on 11 5th, 2009

Computer monitors have evolved over a period of last five years and are now in the stage of transformation. The traditional CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) monitors are being replaced by the stylish LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) computer monitors. The former monitors were bulky and did not have flat screens. They were lower on the resolution and had limited contrast levels. The LCD displays have been popular for their clear and crisp viewing and good imaging. The LCD computer monitors also have a UV (Ultra Violet) protection which helps in diminishing the harmful effect of the screen’s radiation.

The CRT computer monitors are still widely available and are used in small offices and companies. They are preferred for their low cost thus reducing the initial investment. The CRT monitors wear out faster than LCD monitors do, as they develop faults in their color tube. The LCD computer monitors have a better viewing than CRT computer monitors. These LCD computer monitors usually in the popular 15-inch, 17-inch and 21-inch viewable screens. The ideal for any home would be the 17-inch monitor as the cost difference between the 15-inch and 17-inch isn’t much and the size isn’t too big to fit in.

Computer Monitors now also have energy star rating which helps in ensuring low consumption of power. This will enable smart usage of power and you will be rest assured of controlled electricity bills. The best computer monitors are the ones which utilize power as per the usage, depending upon the running applications. You also need to evaluate the computer monitors as per your needs. The wide screen LCD computer monitors are best suited for people who love to watch DVD’s on their computer. The large screen computer monitors are apt for gamers and multimedia creators. If space is your concern then the LCD monitors are the best choice.

You can buy computer monitors from retailer or can also shop for them online at popular online shopping based websites. Such websites offer a display of the latest computer monitors and you can choose the one that best meets your requirements. If you are on a tight budget you can find low price computer monitors which will fit your bill perfectly. These online sites also offer great discounts and deals on your purchases.
